Coffee as breast cancer prevention?
A study done at two universities in Sweden suggests drinking two or more cups of coffee a day prevents breast cancer in women with a variant of a certain gene. Coffee affects estrogen and the caffeine in coffee prevents growth of cancer cells.
The study looked at 460 women women being treated for breast cancer. About half of the women had a gene variant which the researchers called A/A. The other half had either A/C or C/C. The women with the A/C or C/C variant who drank at least three cups of coffee a day, had two-thirds less risk of cancer.
The women with the A/A gene variant who drank two or more cups of coffee a day developed cancer later in life but had tumors that were more difficult to treat (ER-negative).
Reduced breast cancer risk with Mexican diet

A new study says a traditional Mexican diet can prevent breast cancer in many women. The research took place in the four states of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. The results showed that a diet which focuses on Mexican cheeses, tomato-based sauces, soups, beans and meat could help reduce breast cancer risks in Hispanic and non-Hispanic women.
Doctors and patients alike have wondered whether a specific diet could prevent breast cancer. Heart disease, for instance, can sometimes be held at bay with a low-fat and red-wine diet.
The study was prompted when several researchers at the University of Utah noticed lower rates of breast cancer in Hispanic women than in non-Hispanic white women.
Study participants were identified as Hispanic or non-Hispanic white women and then as pre-menopausal or menopausal. The women were asked what types and amounts of food they ate. The two diets most successful in preventing breast cancer were:
Native Mexican diet: Soups, legumes, tomato-based sauces, Mexican cheeses and meat dishes
Mediterranean diet: Low-fat dairy, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, alcohol, chicken and fish
The researchers warn, however that certain diets are not for everyone.

Who knew that a Mexican diet would aid in the reduction of breast cancer? I eat a “Prudent Diet” that is similar to the Mediterranean diet in that it contains a wide selection of grains, fruits and vegetables. However, if combined with wine and a different selection of cheese as well as the Mexican diet help with cancer reduction, I am making the switch.
